Community College Roundup : Rancho Santiago Rallies in Ninth to Win Wild One

Rancho Santiago College scored two runs in the ninth inning for a 5-4 victory over Long Beach Thursday in the first round of the Casey Stengel baseball tournament at Rancho Santiago.

With one out, Marty Neff reached on a bunt single for Rancho Santiago (6-2). Neff went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single up the middle by Tim Reynolds to tie the score, 4-4. With two outs, Reynolds stole second. Mark Dion then struck out but reached first when the ball got away from the catcher. Reynolds, who went to third on the strikeout, scored on a wild pitch to win the game.

Dion had two hits for Rancho Santiago, which plays host to Pima (Arizona) at 10 a.m. today. Sophomore left-hander Willie Navarrette (1-0) allowed eight hits and three earned runs in the victory.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Rancho Santiago 6, El Camino 3--Omar Sary defeated Garrie Peters, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, for host Rancho Santiago (2-2). Sary was down, 5-2, in the second set before rallying. John Fung defeated Visale Beeches, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6, also for Rancho Santiago.

Saddleback 9, MiraCosta 0--Carl Hinds of Saddleback (3-0) defeated Jon Hoffpauir, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Cypress 9, Marymount 0--Loretta Fleming defeated Nina Cullen, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles and combined with Dorothy Bryant to defeat Cullen and Kathleen Herron, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles for host Cypress in the season opener for both teams.

Golden West 9, El Camino 0--Eileen Robertson defeated Patty Yoo, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles for visiting Golden West in the season opener for both teams.
