Graham’s Homer Helps USD Beat PLNC

Chuck Graham’s home run in the fourth inning helped the University of San Diego baseball team defeat host Point Loma Nazarene College, 4-2.

USD (5-5) jumped to an early lead by scoring two runs in the first inning.

Pat Fitzsimons was the winning pitcher (3-0) in a complete game for USD. PLNC is 2-5.

Sean Rees, the 1988 San Diego Section player of the year from Mission Bay High, pitched a six-hitter, struck out 12 and did not walk a batter in Arizona State’s 6-1 victory over Lubbock Christian. Rees is 2-1.

MEN’S SOCCER

Trong Nguyen, a sophomore from Tucson, Ariz., was named the Most Valuable Player on the University of San Diego soccer team. Andrew Kummer, from Las Vegas, was chosen Freshman of the Year.

George Logan, Valhalla High’s boys’ soccer coach, will conduct a class tonight at 7 p.m. at Grant Junior High in Escondido for those interested in obtaining a California State Soccer License (Grade E). The cost is $30. For information, call 440-8147 or 440-1501 (ex. 331).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Christian Heritage lost to host Biola, 116-93, in a District 3 NAIA game.

Biola (25-6, 12-3) jumped to a 20-point lead but Christian Heritage (23-6, 10-3) cut it down to trail, 56-42, at halftime.

Brad Soucie scored 31 points to lead Christian Heritage, and Bill Soucie had 12 rebounds.

Point Loma Nazarene College committed 17 turnovers to just nine for Cal Baptist College, and that proved to be the difference in a 76-60 loss in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Point Loma.

Mark Ryan scored 24 points and had nine rebounds, and Ron Hubbard added 21 points for PLNC (8-20, 5-8).

Both teams shot 47% from the field and PLNC outrebounded Cal Baptist, 36-29. But Cal Baptist (19-10, 7-6) made 12 of 17 free throws to the Crusaders’ nine of 14. PLNC led at the half, 42-33.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Camille Armijo scored 34 points to lead Point Loma Nazarene College (19-10, 7-4) to a 74-62 victory over visiting California Baptist (18-10, 7-4) in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. Shawndel Reddic and Lisa Mowday each had seven rebounds for the Crusaders.

The difference was in defense. Although California Baptist outrebounded the Crusaders, 41-29, Point Loma Nazarene had five blocked shots. California Baptist had 26 turnovers; Point Loma Nazarene had just 11.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

San Diego State defeated visiting Loyola Marymount, 16-14, 15-11, 5-15, 15-8, in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. game. SDSU (5-5, 3-3) is ranked 10th in the coaches’ poll. Loyola Marymount is now 2-9, 1-7 in conference.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Point Loma Nazarene (3-3) shut out visiting Biola (2-2), 9-0. Kim Wright defeated Sandy Gayle, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Wright then teamed with Syndi Lusink to defeat Gayle and Lisa Fowler, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles.

MEN’S TENNIS

University of Hawaii (9-6) defeated host Point Loma Nazarene (0-5), 8-1. John Kress defeated Hawaii’s Iain Pound, 7-6, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.

SOFTBALL

The University of San Diego (1-1) split a doubleheader with Christ College (2-2) at Irvine.
