Fran Cummings, former Cal State Fullerton volleyball coach, has been named general manager of the Los Angeles Starlites, the women’s professional volleyball team that plays its home games at the Bren Center.

Cummings replaces Gary Coffey, who resigned Tuesday for personal reasons. Coffey will continue as general manager and coach of the International Ambassadors women’s volleyball team, which plays an international schedule.

Cummings will manage the Starlites’ day-to-day operations, including marketing, promotions and sponsorships. The Starlites, two-time defending Major League Volleyball champions, played in front of 1,528 Friday in an opening-night victory over the Portland Spikers.

“Obviously some great things have been done to support the team in Irvine and Orange County, and we want to continue to capitalize on that,” Cummings said. “We just need to show people our product. It’s just a matter of turning people on to it.”

Cummings resigned from Fullerton under pressure in November after nine seasons during which her teams had a record of 84-216.
