High School Baseball : Newbury Park Batters Westlake With 2 Grand Slams

Geoff Black and Brian Smith hit grand slams and Wayne Cook added a solo home run to lead Newbury Park High to a 13-10 victory over Westlake in a Marmonte League baseball opener Friday at Newbury Park.

Black also doubled and Cook added a double and single.

Westlake, which has lost three consecutive games, committed eight errors, all in the first three innings, when Newbury Park scored all of its runs. Starter Mike Eby (2-2) was the loser.

For Westlake, Steve Susko and Mike Lieberthal each had three hits and Chuck Foster had a home run and single.

In another Marmonte League game:

Thousand Oaks 8, Channel Islands 4--Judd Schlimgen hit a three-run home run to ignite a five-run Thousand Oaks rally in the third inning at Thousand Oaks.

Schlimgen had two hits and knocked in three runs and Mike McNellis added a triple and was three for three and scored three runs.

John Bushart allowed five hits, struck out seven and walked five in six innings to pick up the win for Thousand Oaks (2-1).

FOOTHILL LEAGUE

Alhambra 3, Hart 2 (suspended)--Like it or not, Hart will get another chance to size up German Louisiaga’s curve. The Alhambra ace struck out six and scattered four hits at Hart before the league opener was suspended because of darkness in the sixth inning with Hart at bat, two out and runners on first and second.

Hart catcher Casey Burrill hit a home run over the right-field fence in the second inning. The Indians added a run in the sixth when Robby Davis singled to score Jason Edwards.

San Gabriel 4, Burroughs 1--Sal Battaclia’s two-run double in the fourth broke a 1-1 tie at San Gabriel.

Burroughs (2-4, 0-1) opened the scoring in the third inning when Mike Medina tripled and Tom Phillips followed with a single. Those were the only hits the Indians managed.

Brian Forth (2-2) pitched a complete game for Burroughs, allowing six hits.

GOLDEN LEAGUE

Saugus 8, Burroughs (R) 4--Darrell Davis had two hits and four stolen bases for the host Centurions. Davis also scored twice and George Lopata was two for four with a run batted in.

Starter Scott Warr (2-0) struck out six and allowed four unearned runs. Roger Salkeld recorded the last four outs to earn his first save.

Canyon 11, Antelope Valley 2--Rick Gombos and Cory Byars each drove in two runs to back Sean Nichols (2-0), who pitched a four-hitter, leading the host Cowboys to the win in a league opener.

DEL REY LEAGUE

Loyola 10, Alemany 6--John Lite, who allowed only six hits in his last two games, allowed 14 hits over seven innings for host Alemany.

Trailing, 5-2, Alemany scored two runs in the fourth. But Loyola (4-3, 2-0) rallied for five in the fifth. Kevin Dell’Amico had four hits, including two home runs, and had three RBIs. Greg Thompson had two hits for Alemany (4-3, 1-1).

Crespi 4, St. John Bosco 4--Chris Romero was two for three, including a two-out, two-strike single in the seventh that drove in the tying run in a darkness-shortened game at St. John Bosco.

Romero’s single scored John Dempsey from third for the Celts’ fourth run. Don Calabria was two for four with an RBI for Crespi and Pat Bennet allowed one hit in relief over the final 4 1/3 innings.

CHANNEL LEAGUE

Rio Mesa 16, Santa Barbara 3--David Frazier had two home runs and five RBIs as the Spartans built a 15-2 lead after three innings in a league opener at Rio Mesa. Carlos Cendejas hit a two-run triple in the Spartans’ six-run third and Shea Freeman added a bases-loaded double. Dmitri Young had a home run, two doubles and scored four runs.

Henry Wilson and Frank Tinoco combined on a five-hitter for Rio Mesa (3-3, 1-0). Wilson (2-0) gave up three hits and struck out six in five innings.

PACIFIC LEAGUE

Hoover 11, Muir 7--Mickey Moreno had five hits and five RBIs, and Mike Regan had three hits and scored five runs for the Tornadoes at Muir. Hoover won its fifth consecutive game.

NONLEAGUE

Chaminade 16, Paraclete 5--The Eagles picked up their first win after starting the season with six losses. Patrick Miller went five for five and scored four runs, leading Chaminade’s 20-hit attack at Rawley Duntley Park in Lancaster. Chris DeCristo added a home run.

Greg Baumgartner (1-2) relieved DeCristo in the first inning and went the distance, striking out 10 to earn the win. He also had two doubles and a single.

Bell-Jeff 6, Salesian 1--Sophomore left-hander Bret Lindsey pitched a two-hitter for his first win in four decisions in a game at Bell-Jeff.

Rod Arancibia was two for three with two RBIs and Tony Cesta had a two-run single for Bell-Jeff.

Oak Park 7, Nordhoff 5--Ron Schaffer singled home Gary Silverman in the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie at Nordhoff. Mark Karr pitched two shutout innings to earn his second save.

Montclair Prep 16, Crossroads 1--The Mounties built a 10-1 lead after three innings and pounded 14 hits at Crossroads.

Brent Polacheck had two doubles, a single and two RBIs and leadoff hitter Chad Calabria had three hits for the Mounties.

Senior right-hander Chris Andersen (3-0) gave up six hits and struck out four in five innings for the win.

SERRA TOURNAMENT

Chino 8, Royal 4--Chino scored six times in the fifth inning to win the tournament championship at Serra High. Royal (4-4) managed only four hits.
