Dan Melendez used his bat and arm to keep St. Bernard atop the Camino Real League baseball standings last week. The left-hander hit two home runs and pitched five shutout innings in an 8-1 win over Pius X and came back on two days rest to throw a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over St. Monica.

Mira Costa’s volleyball team, ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section 4-A Division, kept its perfect record intact Tuesday with a 15-0, 15-0, 15-2 Ocean League victory over South Torrance. The Mustangs are 9-0 overall and 7-0 in league play.

Miraleste first baseman Chad Somers batted seven for 11 (.636) in four games last week. He had one home run, two doubles and 12 RBIs to help the Marauders get off to a 3-0 start in the Santa Fe League.

Going from girls basketball to baseball has been a drastic comedown for Coach Frank Scott of Morningside. Scott, who guided the Lady Monarchs to the state Division I title, watched last week as the baseball team was pounded by West Torrance, 14-5, Culver City, 29-4, and Palos Verdes, 20-1.

Cal State Dominguez Hills, once 5-4 and a half-game out of first place, has lost nine of its last 10 games and fallen to 6-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball race. The Toros are 3 1/2 games out of first.

St. Mary’s Academy of Inglewood is paying the price for putting a young and inexperienced softball team on the field. The Belles were beaten by Mary Star, 15-0, Tuesday and have been outscored, 121-21, in five Camino Real League games.
