Bob Serven said Tuesday he has been hired as boys’ basketball coach at Newport Harbor High School.

Serven, 28, replaces Jerry DeBusk, who resigned last month to become an assistant coach at Chapman College.

Serven has coached at Newport Harbor for the past three seasons, two with the junior varsity and one with the sophomore team. He also has been a varsity assistant coach at Santiago, Arroyo and Bosco Tech high schools.

Tom Meylor resigned as the Loara High School boys’ basketball coach Tuesday, Athletic Director Ray Moore said.

“Tom said he wanted to go back to school to earn his master’s degree,” Moore said. “He felt he couldn’t do that and coach. He just didn’t have enough time.”

Meylor has been the Saxons’ coach for the past three seasons. Loara was 4-17 overall and 2-8 in the Empire League last season.

Meylor will remain at the school as a business teacher.

Lisa Wehren, a four-year varsity starter for Woodbridge High School’s softball team and a shortstop on last year’s Southern Section 2-A championship team has signed a letter of intent to attend San Jose State as a pitcher, her mother, Gail Wehren, said Tuesday.

Wehren is 7-4 this season with an 0.38 ERA and four shutouts, 45 strikeouts and four earned runs in 74 innings.
