High School Roundup : Harvard Takes Swim Title Behind Chang and Cheen

Mike Chang and Justin Cheen each won two events to lead the Harvard High boys’ swim team to the San Fernando Valley League title Thursday in the league championship meet at Harvard.

Chang won the 100-yard butterfly in 54.46 seconds and the 50 freestyle in 22.79. He also swam with Ryan Crosbie, Dan Lau and Kevin Newman on Harvard’s 200-yard medley relay team, which won in 1:46.87.

Cheen won the 200 freestyle in 1:52.84 and the 100 freestyle in 50.39. Cheen also swam on the winning 400-freestyle relay team (3:38.26) with John Paul, Sean Raymond and Damon Willick.

Jun Womeen won the 100 backstroke in 1:02.17 and the 200 individual medley in 2:15.01 to lead Notre Dame to second place.

BASEBALL

Montclair Prep 8, Western Christian 0--Junior right-hander Kevin Grant (4-2) threw a three-hitter and struck out five as the Mounties clinched their seventh consecutive Alpha League title.

Chad Calabria had two hits, two runs batted in and scored two runs for the Mounties (14-5-1, 9-0).

Chaminade 7, Bell-Jeff 3--Freshman left-hander Ted Corcoran struck out nine and did not allow a walk in six innings as the host Eagles moved into first place in the San Fernando Valley League.

Colin Havert had three hits and Chris DeCristo had two.

SOFTBALL

Thousand Oaks 8, Westlake 0--Thousand Oaks clinched its second Marmonte League title in a row behind a no-hitter by junior right-hander Alicia Zinner (17-3) and a 15-hit attack at Thousand Oaks.

Phronsie Franco had three hits, including a three-run home run, and Amy Chellevold had four hits for Thousand Oaks.

Simi Valley 16, Channel Islands 0--Heather Santiago and Gina Skinner combined to throw a no-hitter for the host Pioneers in the Marmonte League game.

Denise Swank had three hits, and two RBIs for the Pioneers (19-7, 8-3).

Saugus 8, Palmdale 2--Cathy Lewis had three hits and pitched a complete game in the Golden League contest at Palmdale.

Hart 17, San Gabriel 0--Cindy Medearis and Heather Medearis each had two hits and two RBIs to lead Hart (23-1, 8-0).

TRACK

Northwest Valley League finals--Chatsworth junior Lori Mertes moved to fourth on this year’s national high school list with a high jump of 5 feet, 10 1/2 inches in the meet at El Camino Real.
