SDSU’s Cody in High Jump Final at NCAA Meet
San Diego State’s Jim Cody is among 12 high jumpers who will compete in today’s final at the NCAA track and field championships in Provo, Utah.
Cody, the defending WAC champion, made the 6-8 qualifying jump in Thursday’s preliminaries. His best is 7-3 1/4 May 20 in the WAC meet.
SAILING
Carl Eichenlaub of the San Diego Yacht Club is the leader after the first race of the three-day IOR class Lipton Cup at the SDYC.
Eichenlaub, sailing Cadenza, leads Donald Hughes of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club, in Quintessence, by two minutes 15 seconds. Wayne Hanson of the Coronado Yacht Club is fifth, and Ron Kuntz of the Oceanside Yacht Club is eighth.
SURFING
A pair of lesser-knowns from Cardiff, Colin Smith and amateur Rob Machado, are among 32 surfers who advanced to the fifth round of the $35,000 Oceanside Open’s main event at Harbor Beach.
They will join highly seeded Mike Lambresi of Oceanside, the two-time defending U.S. surf champion, Dino Andino of San Clemente and Bud Llamas of Huntington Beach for today’s 7 a.m. start.
Top names who failed to make the cut included Doug Silva of Solana Beach and Todd Martin of Cardiff.
In the opening heat of the bodyboard division, Oceanside’s David Cunniff and Leucadia’s Kevin Cerv advanced to today’s round of 16, which will begin at 12:40 p.m.
CYCLING
The American Bicycle Assn. will sponsor a BMX “Race for Life” at the Kearny Moto Park June 11 at 1 p.m., with proceeds going to the Leukemia Society of America.
Riders of all ages are welcome. Cost is $5. Day-of-race registration is 11 a.m.-noon. For information, call 484-1557.
