Kennedy Shortstop Rath Signs With Cal State Fullerton
Steve Rath, Kennedy High School shortstop, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Cal State Fullerton in the fall on a baseball scholarship.
Rath batted .456 in leading Kennedy to the Southern Section 3-A division title. He was 10 for 17 in five playoff games.
Rath, a four-year starter, established school career records for at-bats (330), hits (117), stolen bases (22), runs batted in (54) and triples (seven).
El Dorado, the 5-A division champion, had two more players sign with colleges. Outfielder-pitcher Travis Dowdell signed with Brigham Young University and teammate Shane Borowski signed with Cal State Los Angeles.
Dowdell batted .284 and was 2-2 as a pitcher with a 1.38 earned-run average. Borowski, a right-handed pitcher, was 3-3 with a 1.42 ERA. Five players from El Dorado have signed to play college baseball. Pitcher Pete Janicki (UCLA), catcher Bruce Petillo (University of Pacific) and first baseman Matt Luke (California) signed earlier.
University High School pitcher Kevin Squires has signed with UCLA, his father, Rod, said Thursday. Squires, a left-hander, was 5-4 this season.
