Teri Melanson of West Hollywood won the Los Angeles municipal women’s golf championship, defeating Cal State Long Beach student Susan Giordani on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff at Griffith Park.

Melanson, who has a one handicap and has won the Rancho Park Golf Course women’s club championship in three of the last four years, and Giordani each shot 234 for 54 holes of regulation play. Melanson made a 10-foot putt on the second extra hole to win the title.

Do Kim of Daniel Murphy High School, Carol Koh of Westlake School and the Marlborough School badminton team were among student-athletes and teams in the CIF-Southern Section who were honored for academic achievement by the California Angels and Ford Motor Co. at Anaheim Stadium.

In a three-year curriculum of college preparatory classes, Kim had a grade point average of 3.94. Koh averaged 3.63 on a four-point scale. The Marlborough team had a combined average of 3.5 in college prep courses in the first semester of the 1988-89 school year.

Jack Boyer and Peter Todd won the A flight and Tony Ramos and Bob Ziello won the B flight in the Penmar Men’s Golf Club’s match play championships. Boyer-Todd defeated Dick Conti and Jay Pittman one up, and Ramos-Ziello won three-and-two over Pete Vaughn and Steve Matulin.

Paddy Gallagher of West Los Angeles used a six iron to score a hole in one at the 160-yard eighth hole at Penmar Golf Course, according to starter Richard Schaefer.
