THE SIDELINES : Former Coach Has Heart Transplant

MADISON, Wis. —
Former University of Wisconsin football Coach John Jardine was listed in critical but stable condition today after undergoing a five-hour heart transplant operation.
Jardine, 53, who coached the Badgers from 1970 until 1977, was taken into surgery Thursday night. He suffered from cardiomyopathy, an illness that weakens the heart muscle and enlarges it to two to three times its normal size, the hospital said.
