Howard Isom, an assistant coach in the Huntington Beach Union High School District for 16 years, has been named varsity football coach at Ocean View High School.

Isom, 41, replaces Guy Carrozzo, who resigned 10 days ago to accept a varsity position at Elsinore High.

Isom became an assistant at his alma mater, Westminster High, in 1973 under former Coach Bill Boswell and then moved to Huntington Beach High in 1980 where he was an assistant under Greg Henry and George Pascoe.

Isom has been an assistant at Ocean View for the past four years, serving under Karl Gaytan for one season and then under Carrozzo for three.

Rick Jones, offensive coordinator at Long Beach Millikan High School the past two seasons, has been named varsity football coach at El Dorado.

Jones, 29, previously was an assistant at San Luis Obispo for one season and at Arroyo Grande for four. Jones, who replaces Carl Sweet, was selected from among 25 applicants.

Marc Shaw, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound defensive back from Brea-Olinda High School, has been named to replace Greg Hansell on the North roster that will participate in the 30th Orange County All-Star football game June 30.

Hansell decided to drop from the 36-play roster after posting a 13-1 record as a pitcher and being drafted by the Boston Red Sox. He previously signed a national letter of intent to play football at the Nevada Reno.

South Coach Dave Holland has added Edison’s Greg Thurston, a 6-4, 225-pound tackle, to replace Santiago’s Dana Ripley. Ripley was selected to play but failed to report to team meetings or the opening day of camp.
