Larry Petrill, a former assistant coach at El Camino College and San Jose State, has been named head football coach at Mira Costa High, the school announced Friday.

Petrill succeeds Dave Brown, who was not rehired by the South Bay Union High School District after guiding the Mustangs to a 1-9 record in his one season as coach.

Petrill was the defensive coordinator at El Camino under former Coach Jack Reilly and was the defensive back coach at San Jose State for three years. He has not coached during the last two years.

“We’re really thrilled about hiring Larry Petrill,” Mira Costa Athletic Director Herb Hinsche said. “He’s a tremendous coach and a tremendous role model for kids.”

Hinsche and Petrill were assistant coaches together at Aviation High under Ron Veres.

A South Bay native, Petrill attended Morningside High and went on to play football at El Camino and USC. He was the Athlete of the Year at El Camino in 1965 and played nose guard for USC in the 1967 Rose Bowl game.
