U.S. International announced the signing of Derek Ivilein, a 7-foot center from Nigeria. Ivilein, a junior transfer from Florida A&M;, will redshirt next season. Gary Zarecky, USIU’s coach, said Ivilein contacted USIU after seeing the Gulls last season in the Ball State tournament, in which Florida A&M; also participated.

“He wants to be in a running game, and Florida A&M; plays more of a half-court offense,” Zarecky said.

Claude “Robbie” Robinson Jr., who was an All-San Diego Section basketball player at Madison High School last season, was sentenced to perform 250 hours of community service as a condition of three years’ probation on a conviction for unlawful sex with a minor.

Robinson pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor charge of having sex with a minor. Municipal Court Judge Patricia Cowett said she felt the incident did not involve force or violence but that even though the act was consensual, it was a crime under state law.

TENNIS

Richard Reyes of San Ysidro defeated Bill Tontz, 6-1, 6-1, to win the boys’ 18s title of the 73rd Robins Group La Jolla Tennis Championships Friday.

Jerry Miyamoto of San Diego defeated Chris Tontz, 6-4, 6-4, in the boys’ 16s final.

Other area winners included Elana Gold in the girls’ 12s and Rondia Morris of Chula Vista in the girls’ 10s.

BOATING

Bill Hardesty of the Mission Bay Yacht Club finished first among 145 junior boaters in the Dutch Shoe Marathon race from the San Diego Yacht Club to the Coronado Yacht Club.

Walt Allman of the San Diego Yacht Club finished second, and Mark Ivey of the Huntington Harbor Yacht Club was third in the six-mile race.

Lizzy Collins of Newport Harbor Yacht Club won the B Fleet title, and Mindy McDonnel of Lido Isle Yacht Club won the C Fleet race.
