Newport’s Dupre Helps Team Take Top Spot in Golf

Tracy Dupre of Newport Beach and her partner, Stephanie Martin of Camarillo, shot a 76 Friday to open a seven-shot lead in the girls’ 12-18 four-ball competition at the La Paloma team golf tournament at Tucson, Ariz.

Dupre and Martin have a two-day total of four-over-par 148.

In the boys’ 12-14 four-ball, Joe and Ben Garner of El Toro struggled to an 86 and dropped 16 shots behind the leaders.

Mike Bestor of Laguna Niguel and Austin Maki of Costa Mesa, competing in the boys’ 15-18-year-old division, also had a tough day. They added an 85 to their opening-round 69 and trail the leaders by 19 strokes.

Half the field in the boys’ 15-18 division played the foursome format, in which partners alternate hitting shots. The other half played four-ball (better ball).
