300 Acres Between 2 Colleges Charred
A brush fire that burned 300 acres of open land between the adjacent campuses of Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut and Cal Poly Pomona was declared contained late Friday, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported.
The cause of the fire, which started at 2:36 p.m., is under investigation, according to county fire dispatcher Charlotte Kramer. About 200 firefighters were assisted by water-dropping helicopters and bulldozers in fighting the blaze, which started near Grand and Temple Avenues.
It briefly threatened structures and caused 800 students to be evacuated from a dormitory at Cal Poly Pomona, Kramer said.
Campus police evacuated the dormitory when 10- to-15-m.p.h. winds pushed the “head of the fire” toward the school, Fire Inspector John Tabak said.
One firefighter who suffered minor burns was treated at San Dimas Community Hospital and released.
