Two-Hitter by West Leads Conejo Valley

Behind Adam West’s two-hitter, Conejo Valley defeated University City, 8-0, Saturday in Hacienda Heights in the first round of the state divisional Senior Division (15-year-old) baseball playoffs.
Conejo Valley is representing Section I, an area from Santa Maria to Toluca Lake, in the eight-team tournament. University City is the representative from San Diego County.
West struck out 10 and also doubled, singled and drove in two runs. Also for Conejo Valley, Brian Capella drove in four runs on two hits and a sacrifice fly, Ryan Kritscher had a double and single and Chris Loll doubled.
Jacinda Sweet scored a game-high 19 points for North Hollywood High, but Palos Verdes rallied for a 45-44 victory over the Huskies in the Bell-Jeff girls’ basketball tournament Saturday.
Julie Cusumano scored 11 points for Bell-Jeff, which lost to Morningside, 41-24. In other second-round games, Washington defeated Alemany, 43-29; Redlands defeated Hart, 36-21; Muir defeated Channel Islands 44-35; and Valencia defeated St. Mary’s 41-22.
The championship of the 24-team tournament is Wednesday.
Brent Cookson hit a two-run triple to key a Woodland Hills Astros’ three-run rally in the first inning of their 5-3 victory Saturday over L. A. Harbor in the first round of the Stan Musial tournament at Cal State Los Angeles.
Joel Wolfe had a run-scoring double and Dave Tokheim added two hits for the Astros (24-7).
Steve deLaveaga, the all-time leading basketball scorer at Cal Lutheran, will try out for the Los Angeles Lakers at their two-day mini-camp at Loyola Marymount beginning Monday.
John Siemens, Cal Lutheran men’s tennis coach for the past nine years, has resigned for personal reasons, according to Robert Doering, CLU athletic director.
Siemens led the Kingsmen to three NAIA District 3 titles and two second-place finishes. Five All-Americans played for Siemens at Cal Lutheran.
