Dallas Cowboys Coach Jimmy Johnson said his team will honor quarterback Steve Pelluer’s wish to be traded.

“We do want to trade Steve Pelluer,” Johnson told the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram. “But I’m not that active in the trade situation. We’re going to let the Steve Pelluer trade come to us.”

Pelluer, who was 7-20 as the Cowboys’ starter the last two seasons, requested a trade several months ago. He is unsigned and the only veteran who did not report to the Cowboys’ training camp here.

Johnson said after the team’s practice session Sunday that the Cowboys have talked with several clubs about Pelluer.

The team hopes to make a deal within two weeks, said John Wooten, Cowboys director of pro personnel. The Atlanta Falcons and San Diego Chargers have shown the most interest in Pelluer, Wooten told the Star-Telegram.

The Cowboys offered Pelluer a base salary of $402,000 and up to $200,000 in incentive clauses, but he reportedly has demanded $600,000.

Wooten said the team decided to trade Pelluer because “it’s obvious he doesn’t want our deal.”

Johnson said he would prefer that the Cowboys be compensated for Pelluer with draft picks rather than players.
