Sam Okwaraji, a top Nigerian soccer player, collapsed and died during a World Cup qualifier against Angola at Lagos, Nigeria. Seven fans also died of suffocation from overcrowding in the stands during the match.
Okwaraji, who recently signed a $500,000 contract with Berchem of Antwerp, Belgium, collapsed with 10 minutes remaining in Nigeria’s 1-0 victory. He was rushed to a Lagos hospital but died a few minutes after arrival.
At least 100,000 people were packed into Lagos Stadium, which is built to hold 80,000.
