Fullerton College’s starting offensive and defensive units reported for work on Saturday only to find they had part-time jobs.

Fullerton was making mass substitutions as early as the second quarter in a 38-6 victory over College of the Desert before a crowd of about 2,750 at Fullerton District Stadium.

The matter was decided quickly; the Hornets (1-0) scored on the second play of the game.

Fullerton, the defending Mission Conference champions, led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, 24-0 at the half and 31-0 after three quarters.

Fullerton’s first play from scrimmage was a six-yard run by Jeff Andrews. The second play started as a quick 10-yard pass to receiver Richard Nelson. But, thanks partly to a block by tight end Rob Coons, the play turned into a 68-yard touchdown.

“I caught the ball,” Nelson said. “Looked up-field and it was open. I was surprised.”

Andrews scored the second Fullerton touchdown on a 15-yard run that featured a swift cut to the middle after the play appeared stopped on the outside.

Andrews, a sophomore, had 99 yards on 13 carries. He was one of the many starters who played very little after the first quarter.

Andrews had 67 yards on eight carries in the first quarter. He carried the ball only three times in the second quarter and once in the second half.

Andrews rushed for a Fullerton single-season record 1,520 yards last season.

Fullerton got two touchdowns on passes from quarterback David Chisum to wide receiver Mike Thomas. The first, for 11 yards, came with 9:31 left in the second quarter and gave Fullerton a 24-0 lead.

Eric Lange had kicked a 36-yard field goal earlier in the quarter. Thomas made a leaping catch of a 29-yard touchdown with 10:46 left in the third quarter.

Chisum, a sophomore from Sunny Hills High School, completed 12 of 17 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns in a little more than two-and-a-half quarters.

Even the Fullerton second-team offense scored a fourth-quarter touchdown. Fullback Tony Goulet scored on a two-yard run with 5:36 left.

The play capped a 15-play, 75-yard drive led by reserve quarterback Tracy Garrett.

While the Fullerton offense was rolling, the Hornet defense stopped Desert almost completely in the first half, allowing the Roadrunners only two first downs and 13 yards of total offense.

Long Beach 13, Golden West 6--Host Long Beach scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to win.

Sean Cheatam scored Golden West’s touchdown from two yards out in the third quarter. Corey Dickson had 75 yards rushing on 15 carries for Golden West.
