Southland Roundup : Sonoma State Defeats Cal Lutheran

Quarterback Danny Calcagno completed 7 of 11 passes for 119 yards to lead Sonoma State to a 17-9 victory over Cal Lutheran on Saturday at Rohnert Park, Calif.

Calcagno’s pass of 11 yards to Keven Restani put Sonoma State, scoreless until the third quarter, ahead for good. Sonoma State (1-0) also scored on a 50-yard field goal by Ed Beaulac and a 42-yard punt return by Anthony McPherson.

Occidental football--It was reported incorrectly Sunday that Occidental defeated Menlo College. Menlo won, 16-14.

The Kingsmen (0-1) led, 3-0, at halftime on a 25-yard field goal by Greg Maw, and the Kingsmen scored again late in the game on a 15-yard pass from Dan Nagelmann to Tony Leogrande.

San Francisco State 18, Redlands 6--Essex Burton’s 78-yard punt return in the fourth quarter helped San Francisco State defeat Redlands at San Francisco.

William Harris’ six-yard run on an intercepted pass gave San Francisco State (1-0) the final touchdown.

Redlands (0-1) tied the score, 6-6, at the start of the fourth quarter on a 61-yard run by halfback Chris Nance.

Receiver DeBrady Hampton had put the Gators ahead, 6-0, in the second quarter, scoring on a 17-yard pass from quarterback Herman Tatum.

UC Santa Barbara 24, Humboldt St. 17--Mike Curtius completed 37 of 54 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns as the Gauchos defeated the Lumberjacks at Santa Barbara.

Curtius threw for two touchdowns to Brian Fleming within a 25-second span of the third quarter.

Khaled Shahbo, who set a school single-game reception record with 12 catches, also caught a touchdown pass.

Trailing 24-10, Humboldt State cut the lead to seven points with 3:53 remaining when Rodney Dorsett threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Robnert Caldwell.

Cal Poly SLO 31, West Texas State 10--Quarterback David Lafferty passed for 182 yards and two touchdowns as the Mustangs won a nonconference game at San Luis Obispo.

Running back Todd Henderson rushed for 107 yards in 20 carries and scored two touchdowns for Cal Poly (1-0), which had 342 yards of total offense.

The Mustangs held West Texas (0-2) to minus-42 yards rushing and had 11 sacks.

Occidental 14, Menlo 13--The Tigers spotted Menlo a 13-0 lead at Occidental before finally getting their offense into gear at the start of the fourth quarter. Behind senior quarterback Tony Werbelow, who completed a nine-yard touchdown pass to Rob Leinbach, and sophomore running back Steve McClaskey, who scored on a two-yard run, the Tigers rallied to take a 14-13 lead with 9:03 to play.

However, on the ensuing kickoff--which took place from the 50-yard line because of a penalty against Menlo on the extra point--Dan Wahl caught the ball on the Menlo five and weaved through defenders for a 76-yard return. With 4:26 left Blair Naegle kicked a 28-yard field goal that gave the Oaks their margin of victory.

McClaskey, a 5-foot-10, 177-pound transfer from Azusa Pacific, rushed for 109 yards in 24 carries. Senior quarterback Greg Clark was the standout performer for Menlo, completing eight of 17 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns.

San Diego 24, Azusa Pacific 6--Fullback Todd Jackson rushed for 117 yards in 21 carries and quarterback Brenden Murphy completed 14 of 21 passes for 192 yards--including a five-yard touchdown to Mike Hintze--as the Toreros defeated the Cougars before 3,827 at San Diego.
