Community College Roundup : Golden West Reaches Water Polo Semifinal

Golden West College won two matches Friday at the Cuesta water polo tournament to advance to the semifinal round.

The Rustlers defeated San Diego Mesa, 17-5, in the quarterfinals after beating College of the Sequoias, 17-6, earlier on Friday.

Henry Rebello had four goals and Greg LaPointe three for Golden West in the Mesa game.

Steve Kidder and Rebello had four goals and Matt Mauser had three in the victory over Sequoias. Golden West plays two-time defending state champion Long Beach today at 10:30 a.m. Long Beach has won 11 of the last 13 matches with Golden West.

In other Cuesta tournament water polo matches:

Cuesta 9, Saddleback 7--Tino Perong had three goals for Saddleback in the Gauchos’second-round loss. Saddleback had defeated Cerritos, 11-9, in the first round. Perong had five goals and Dave Becker three for Saddleback, which will play Orange Coast at 9:30 a.m. today in the consolation round.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Cypress 3, MiraCosta 2--Cypress (2-0) was led by freshman Karen Lane who had 21 kills, 17 assists and five aces in Cypress’ 15-17, 15-12, 15-8, 8-15, 15-6, victory. Cypress’ Kari Calliham had 11 kills, four blocks and three aces. MiraCosta is 0-1.

Saddleback 3, Alan Hancock 0--Cyndi Rhone had 16 kills to help Saddleback to a 15-2, 15-11, 15-10 sweep at Alan Hancock.
