Roundup : Santa Margarita Rallies To Win

Running back Josh Ireland gained 158 yards in 21 carries and scored two touchdowns as Santa Margarita High School overcame a 12-3 deficit in the second half for a 23-12 victory over host Harvard Friday night in nonleague play in North Hollywood.

Ireland scored on runs of 17 and 53 yards as Santa Margarita defeated its first varsity opponent in the school’s three-year history and improved to 2-1. Last week, Santa Margarita defeated Jurupa Valley’s junior varsity team.

Quarterback Trevor Yankoff completed six of 18 passes for 126 yards and scored on a two-yard keeper in the fourth quarter to finish Santa Margarita’s scoring.

Bolsa Grande 16, Pioneer 14--Quarterback Sonny Nguyen ran for a touchdown, passed for another, kicked a 32-yard field goal and the extra points in the Matadors’ victory at home over winless Pioneer.

Trailing 14-10, Bolsa Grande (2-1) took the second-half kickoff and drove 70 yards for the winning touchdown, a 29-yard pass from Nguyen to wide receiver Trent Wood. After that, two Matador fumbles helped to quiet Bolsa Grande.

Savanna 21, Cypress 0--Quarterback Kenison PoChing scored two touchdowns in the second half as Savanna snapped an 11-game losing streak spanning two seasons with a victory at Western.

Savanna’s last victory was over Garden Grove, 12-7, in its season opener last year. The Rebels are 1-2 this year.

El Modena 28, Warren 0--Junior quarterback Adam Garcia passed for 160 yards and one touchdown and ran for another to lead visiting El Modena High School past Warren.

It was the first victory in three games for the Vanguards, who built a 21-0 lead by halftime. Warren is 1-2. The tone was set on the opening drive, when El Modena used 15 plays to go 59 yards, scoring on Garcia’s 1-yard run with 3:48 left in the quarter. Garcia, 12 for 18 on the night, hit four of six passes for 48 yards on that drive.

In the second quarter, tailback Ryan Ogden’s 19-yard scoring run completed a 59-yard drive that put the Vanguards ahead 14-0.

They only had to go 34 yards for their third touchdown, after a short punt by Warren. Reserve tailback Tom Mazzone scored from one yard out with 2:53 left in the half for a 21-0 lead.

The only score of the second half was a 52-yard pass from Garcia to tight end Graham Brown on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Norco 35, Pacifica 21--Host Norco had 519 yards and 390 rushing. One bright spot for Pacifica was quarterback Bobby Anderson, who was 13 of 19 passing for 314 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Pacifica was down 14-0 in the first quarter when Chris Shockley picked up teammate Brett Clark’s fumble on Norco’s kickoff and ran 75 yards for the score.

In eight-man football:

Ribet Academy 50, Claremont 22--Host Claremont cut the lead to 28-22 early in the fourth quarter but could get no closer.

Ribet had a fourth and 15 on its 32 early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Kiesh Henderon broke a 20-yard run to keep the drive going. Henderson scored four touchdowns.

Ken Perkins had 93 yards in carries for Claremont.
