Sunny Hills High School is demonstrating that when a team averages 297 yards rushing per game, it doesn’t need a passing attack.

Sunny Hills (3-0) will continue its ground assault at 7:30 tonight when the Lancers play Canyon (1-2) at Buena Park’s Spaulding Field.

Rick Orr, the Sunny Hills quarterback, has completed six of only 17 passes for 136 yards. But the Lancers’ backfield combination of Brian Pizula and Ken Overby has more than made up for the lack of an air attack.

Pizula, averaging 13.7 yards per carry, has rushed for 534 yards and scored seven touchdowns; Overby has rushed for 271 yards.

“We realize that our passing game needs work, and we’ll continue to work on that,” Sunny Hills Coach Tim Devaney said. “But when you have quality backs, you’d be stupid not to use them as much as possible.”

Sunny Hills is coming off a one-week trip to Edmonton, Canada, where the Lancers pounded La Zerte, 51-0.

“We’ve had a lot of kids miss practice so they could make up tests or assignments,” Devaney said. “It also took a couple of days for the kids to come back down to Earth. It was a great trip, but now it’s time to get back to business.”

Canyon is coming off a winless season in 1988 but upset Corona, 10-7, in its season opener for new Coach Loren Shumer.

In other games, Orange Lutheran will open play in the Olympic League against host Miraleste at 2 p.m.
