Share

Van Nuys High had no trouble running for three yards against Marshall’s defense the entire game Friday--until the final play.

After David Hwang caught a 13-yard touchdown pass with no time remaining to close to within a point, the Wolves opted for a two-point conversion try from the three-yard line and a chance to win. But Marshall stopped running back Aaron Gadasy on a pitch play to preserve a 26-25 nonconference victory at Marshall.

Marshall (1-2) produced three scoring pass plays in the second half to overcome a 12-10 halftime deficit. Danny Altruz completed the Barristers’ scoring when he caught an 18-yard pass from quarterback Carlos Gutierrez to give Marshall a 26-19 lead with 2:34 left.

Gutierrez completed 12 of 20 passes for 243 yards and four touchdowns.

On its final drive, Van Nuys (0-2) went 63 yards in 11 plays before Hwang’s score, a pass from quarterback Roy Vasich.

Van Nuys rushed for 206 yards, led by Gadasy with 126 yards in 18 carries. Gadasy scored on a 19-yard sweep in the third quarter and lost a 38-yard touchdown reception just before halftime because of a clipping penalty .
