Brunswig’s Three Scores Lead Canyon to Victory

Jeff Brunswig scored three touchdowns to lead Canyon High School to a 42-17 nonleague victory over Woodbridge Friday night at El Modena High School.
Quarterback Chuck Nickerson completed five of 10 passes for 105 yards for the Comanches (2-3).
Woodbridge (2-3) was led by Scott Seymour, who scored a touchdown and rushed for 82 yards in 15 carries.
Woodbridge took a 7-0 lead when quarterback Gary Fishel connected with Gary Gibson on a five-yard touchdown pass with 10:31 left in the second quarter. The Warriors then moved ahead, 10-0, on a 23-yard field goal by Troy Holme.
But Canyon closed the gap to 10-7 on an 11-yard pass from Nickerson to George Garcia with 1:11 left in the second quarter. Woodbridge fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Canyon recovered at the Woodbridge 17-yard line. The Comanches then took a 14-10 lead when Nickerson hit Brunswig on a 17-yard pass with 39 seconds left in the second quarter.
An eight-yard touchdown run by Mike Greene put Canyon ahead, 21-10, in the third quarter. Woodbridge closed the gap to 21-17 on a five-yard touchdown pass from Fishel to Seymour with 2:14 left in the quarter.
Fred Velez ran 58 yards for a score to get the Comanches a 20-17 lead with 1:48 left in the third quarter. And Canyon never trailed again.
