Even without the interception, Point Loma Coach Ben Edens said Saturday’s victory belonged to visiting Capistrano Valley.

With one minute remaining, Point Loma quarterback Danny White recovered from a third down and 10 with a 14-yard pass to J.J. Stokes, moving the ball to their own 48-yard line. But Brett Callan, on a hand off from White, threw a pass that was intercepted by Cougar Mike Lavin. With 20 seconds remaining, Cougar quarterback Tony Solliday let the clock run down securing a 21-17 nonleague victory.

“We had to reach at that point,” Edens said of the Pointers who dropped to 2-3.

In the third quarter, the Pointers increased their 7-6 halftime lead to 14-6. With the ball on the Cougar 22-yard line, White fumbled on a run but the ball was recovered by teammate Shane Irwin on the 11-yard line. After White carried the ball four yards for a first down, Marlin Manassa rushed for six yards then scored on the next play on a one-yard run.

Manassa had 11 carries for 53 yards and one touchdown. White was eight for 16 for 145 yards.

With two minutes remaining in the game and the Pointers ahead, 17-14, Solliday, with the ball on the 18-yard line, completed a 17-yard pass to Dave Poltl putting the ball within inches of the goal. After two unsuccessful rushing attempts by Paul Shaheen, Solliday ran the ball for the touchdown. A successful kick put Capistrano Valley (5-0) ahead (21-17) for the first time since its early 6-0 lead.
