Stanley Reaches Match Play in Mid-Amateur

Mildred Stanley of Escondido qualified Sunday for match play in the Women’s Mid-Amateur championships on the par-72 Hills of Lakeway Golf Club in Lakeway, Texas.

Stanley’s two-round total of 76-83--159 was nine strokes behind medalist Carol Semple Thompson of Sewickley, Pa., with a 75-75--150.

Stanley was among the top 20 qualifiers.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal State Dominguez Hills (13-1), ranked No. 2 in Division II, scored four consecutive goals in the first half en route to a 5-2 victory over USIU.

USIU’s Kelly Pietila scored with five minutes left in the first half, and teammate Kim White scored two minutes into the second half to cut Dominguez Hills’ lead, but USIU (4-9) could get no closer.

MEN’S SOCCER

San Diego State improved to 8-3-1 by shutting out Cal, 2-0. The goals were scored by Eric Wynalda (with an assist to Patrick Merrell) and Jeff Detts (assisted by Steve Abele and Ken Taylor).

The 20th-ranked Aztecs will play at No. 2 UCLA Wednesday.

Mike Kappes kicked in a free ball 19 minutes into overtime to give UCSD a 1-0 road victory over USIU (1-12). Brian Siljander picked up the shutout for UCSD (6-3-2); Ricardo Rodrigues just missed out on his first shutout of the year for USIU.
