TOP PERFORMERS Fountain Valley quarterback Willy Puga completed his first eight passes and finished with 16 completions in 26 attempts for 226 yards and two touchdowns. But Puga also threw two interceptions and the defending Sunset League champion Barons lost to Ocean View, 17-16, in their league opener. Todd Gragnano, Los Alamitos quarterback, became only the fifth player in Orange County history to throw for more than 5,000 yards in a career. Gragnano completed 10 of 12 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns in Los Alamitos’ 58-28 victory over Katella to push his career total to 5,051. Teammate Erik Mitchell added 224 yards rushing in 16 carries, scoring five touchdowns. ODDS AND ENDS Fullerton was penalized 12 times for 125 yards in a 37-7 victory over Sonora. Last week, Fullerton lost five fumbles in a 9-3 loss to Western. “We can’t continue to do this and win,” said Coach Steve Nishimoto. Mater Dei’s Tino Chavez had eight receptions for 129 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Mater Dei’s 34-24 victory Friday over St. Paul, all of which may have led to his dropping a fourth-quarter pass in the end zone. ‘I guess I just got too happy,’ Chavez said. Westminster’s versatile Vince Tauanuu, who had been relegated to special teams duty for four games because of cracked ribs, played a big part in Westminster’s victory over Marina. Tauanuu’s blind-side sack of quarterback David Schultz killed a Marina drive inside the Westminster 20-yard line at the end of the third quarter. All three of Tauanuu’s kickoffs went into the end zone for touchbacks, and he averaged 41 yards a punt on six punts, including a 55-yarder. Villa Park’s James Hong returned the second half kickoff 39 yards, but fumbled the ball when hit at the 50-yard line. Teammate Garrett Johnson grabbed the ball at the Villa Park 45 and went 53 yards to the Foothill two. However, the Spartans could manage only a field goal. QUOTE UNQUOTE ‘If you break their spirit, they are not going to have the resiliency to come back back from 1-4. If you take all the stallions and make them plow horses then you’ve got nothing. You have to have the guys who want to jump the coral.’ --LARRY TONER, Servite coach, after his team defeated Alemany, 24-6, Friday. ‘It’s a sweet victory. When you’re 0-5 it gets tougher and tougher to break out of it. People start looking for things to go wrong.’ --STAN CLARK, Westminster coach, on his team’s 9-7 victory over Marina that snapped a five-game losing streak ‘I asked the kids what they wanted to do and they said go for it, which was great because that’s what I wanted to do.’ --MARTY McWHINNEY, Foothill coach, describing the discussion in the huddle with his team facing a a fourth-and-a- foot play with the Knights leading, 21-16, late in the game. ‘It’s one of those things that if we make it I’m a genius, and if we don’t, I’m an idiot. Fortunately, the kids executed it perfectly.’ --JACK NICHOLS, La Habra coach, after the Highlanders scored on the last play of the first half following a roughing the kicker penalty against Buena Park on a field-goal attempt.
