4th Cross-Country Division Proposed

The Federated Council of the California Interscholastic Federation has recommended that a fourth division be added to the state cross-country championship meet effective in the 1990 season.

Currently, the state’s teams are divided into three divisions according to enrollment. Division I comprises schools with 1,600 enrollment or higher. Division II is for schools 700 to 1,599, and Division III is for schools 699 and lower.

The proposal will be sent to the 10 sections of the CIF for discussion and will be put to a vote at the Council’s next meeting Feb. 2.

At a meeting this weekend in Palm Springs, the Council also approved measures that will take effect for the upcoming basketball and baseball seasons.

The basketball coach’s box that was used on an experimental basis last year has been approved for all 10 sections, and a 14-inning-per-week limit for baseball pitchers was adopted.

Basketball coaches will be confined to a 2-by-6-foot box that runs from the bench to the scorer’s table. Coaches are permitted to instruct players and shout encouragement from the box but are forbidden to voice complaints to officials while standing.
