SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : Interception Saves Win for Occidental

Ronnie Cunningham’s diving interception in the final seconds gave Occidental a 21-17 victory over Redlands in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday at Occidental.

The victory assured Occidental of at least a tie for the conference title. The Tigers (6-2) can clinch their fourth consecutive championship with a win against Whittier next week. Redlands dropped to 4-4.

Cunningham’s interception came just seconds before Redlands’ Brian Harmon threw a 17-yard pass to Rich Jacobs to move to the Occidental 38-yard line on fourth and 15.

Gary Little rushed for 135 yards in 34 carries and scored two touchdowns for Occidental. Curt Landreth had 155 yards in 18 carries for Redlands.

UC Santa Barbara 59, Menlo 0--Steve Armstrong threw for 425 yards and five touchdowns as the the Gauchos cruised to the win at Santa Barbara.

Armstrong, who completed 29 of 39 passes, set school records for completions and yardage. He scored on a one-yard run in the first quarter and threw touchdown passes of 50, 18, 11, 10 and 27 yards to five receivers.

The Gauchos (7-2) had 612 yards total offense and held Menlo to 77.

Cal Lutheran 21, Azusa Pacific 17--Craig Ashley returned a kickoff 42 yards on a reverse, setting up Dean Henderson’s 19-yard touchdown run with 9:46 left, as the Kingsmen won at Thousand Oaks.

Ashley got the ball on a reverse from Eddie Hoffman and returned it to the Azusa Pacific 46. Two plays later, Henderson scored from the 19.

Cal Lutheran improved to 3-6. Azusa Pacific dropped to 3-4.

Whittier 36, Pomona-Pitzer 12--Quarterback Mike Haney threw three touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the Poets at Whittier.

CS Northridge 24, Sacramento State 13--Albert Fann rushed for 251 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Matadors to a Western Football Conference win at Sacramento.

Southern Utah State 38, Cal Poly SLO 24--Kelvin Minefee rushed for 111 yards in 26 carries and scored three touchdowns as the Thunderbirds held off the Mustangs at Cedar City, Utah.
