HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : No. 1 Poway Leads Way to Third Round in Volleyball

The eight seeded teams and eight others advanced Tuesday to the third round of the Division I girls’ volleyball playoffs, which will be played Thursday.

No. 1 Poway (27-0) was most impressive winning in consecutive sets, 15-0, 15-0, 15-0, over Hilltop (5-19). No. 2 Torrey Pines had little trouble with Castle Park, 16-14, 15-3, 15-1.

Patrick Henry had Tuesday’s biggest upset defeating Santana in Santee, 15-12, 15-5, 10-15, 15-5. Jenni Cross led the Patriots (8-5) with 13 kills. Santana finished 14-6.

In Granite Hills’ four-game victory over Chula Vista, Terah Dagley had 15 kills and Kelly Barnes 13. Helix’ Carrie Downey had 15 kills and Nicki Cando 12 in the Highlanders’ three-game victory over Carlsbad.

Sarah Gruer had 10 kills as Grossmont defeated Mar Vista in four games.

Girls’ Tennis

In the quarterfinals of the Reebok team tennis tournament, Serra, San Dieguito, Bonita Vista and Helix advanced in the 3-A class, and Grossmont, Coronado, Valhalla and La Jolla Country Day advanced in 2-A.

With the doubles teams of Tricia Farris-Kristin Hart and Jill Buckley-Ericka Castaneda sweeping their matches, Helix (14-4) took eight of nine of the doubles matches in defeating Orange Glen, 12-6. The Highlander’s Carola Geerlings swept her three singles matches.

Serra won eight of nine singles matches, including three by Nikki Willette, to upset Monte Vista, 13-5. The Conquistadors (7-8) will face No. 1 Poway in today’s quarterfinals.

Among others, singles players Kristen King and Kim Bilsland stood out in Valhalla’s 18-0 sweep of Crawford. The doubles team of Dina Spangeberg-Kristen Adelman lost just one game. Valhalla is 9-8.

In Grossmont’s doubles, Mendy Cady and Marcia Herron won their matches, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. Grossmont (17-3) defeated San Pasqual, 12-6, and will play No. 1 Bishop’s today.
