HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Elsberry Ends Unbeaten Run of Poway’s Kimura
Bishops High’s Branaca Elsberry stunned Poway’s Sayaka Kimura, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the section girls’ tennis championships at San Diego Racquet & Tennis Club.
Kimura, an exchange student from Tokyo and the tournament’s No. 2 seed, had not lost a match this year.
Elsberry, seeded sixth, will meet Serra’s Nikii Willette, who beat Carola Geerlings of Orange Glen, in today’s semifinals at 2 p.m. at the San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club.
Elsberry’s teammate, top-seeded Brooke Galardi, also advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Lynn Coakley of La Jolla. Galardi will play Leanne Rostovsky of La Jolla, who beat Nicole Elliott of Our Lady of Peace, 6-3, 6-1.
Krista Kuechler and Erin Bohrnstedt of Torrey Pines, the No. 1-seeded doubles team, defeated Isabelle Schoepflin and Kate Pyle of La Jolla Country Day, 6-1, 6-1, to advance to today’s semifinals at 2 p.m.
They will be joined there by teammates Kim Sherrod and Kelly Kestler, the second-seeded team, which defeated No. 6 Nicole Murk and Christine Balestri of University, 6-2, 6-2.
Volleyball
Torrey Pines defeated Helix, 9-15, 15-2, 15-6, 15-3, to advance to the Division I final. Torrey Pines (24-2) was led by Lisa Jhung and Amy Carrol, who had 11 kills each. It will play Poway, which defeated San Dieguito, 15-9, 15-8, 15-5. Heather Collins led Poway (29-0) with 11 kills and Christy Fortney added eight.
USDHS defeated Mission Bay, 15-11, 15-9, 15-8 in the Division II semifinals. Amy Seidlinger had 12 kills for USDHS (18-2). La Jolla beat Escondido, 15-8, 15-11, 10-15, 15-8, in the other semifinal.
In Division III action, Frances Parker defeated Calvin Christian, 7-15, 15-11, 15-8, 15-13, behind Mary Burt’s 13 kills. Parker will meet Christian, which defeated La Jolla Country Day, in Saturday’s finals.
