The medical report on San Diego State quarterback Dan McGwire is that he has a slight lower abdominal strain that should not keep him out of Saturday’s game against No. 7 Miami in the Orange Bowl.

But the limp in his walk Thursday afternoon warned that there might be reason for concern.

“I’ll be able to play,” McGwire said. “I can’t miss this game. It’s too important to the team.”

McGwire said he first noticed the injury while running sprints at the end of practice Wednesday. He said he did not consider it serious at the time, but by Thursday afternoon, it was too stiff to allow him to practice.

He left the field and was examined by Dr. Robert Staumfjord, the team physician. Team trainer Brian Barry said McGwire will be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs and, with rest, should be able to start Saturday.

“It’s pretty sore now,” McGwire said. “It hurts my mobility, but if I stay off my feet and rest, it should get better.”

McGwire ranks fourth in the country in total offense, averaging 310.7 yards per game. His backup is David Lowery, a freshman from Trabuco Hills.
