A winning record and a share of second place in the Big West Conference will be at stake when Cal State Fullerton finishes its season today against San Jose State.

Fullerton, 5-4-1 overall and 4-2 in the conference, has not finished better than .500 since 1985. San Jose State (5-4, 4-1) is alone in second place with two games remaining. Utah State and Nevada Las Vegas also have two losses.

Fullerton’s Mike Pringle, who is leading the nation in all-purpose running and is second to Indiana’s Anthony Thompson in rushing yardage, needs 181 yards to break the conference single-season rushing record of 1,789 yards set in 1978 by Fullerton’s Obie Graves. Pringle is averaging 161 yards a game and has eight 100-yard games, three 200-yard games and one 300-yard game this season.

San Jose State, whose only conference defeat was a 31-30 loss to champion Fresno State on a failed extra-point attempt, is led by running back Sheldon Canley, who is averaging 106 yards a game and is second in the nation to Pringle in all-purpose running.

The kickoff is set for noon in Spartan Stadium.
