MISSION VIEJO — In a game that was by no means as close as the final score, No. 1-ranked Capistrano Valley opened its quest for the Southern Section Division III championship with a 35-21 playoff victory over Burroughs (Burbank) Friday night.
Tony Solliday threw three touchdown passes to Dave Poltl in the first half before retiring for the night with 11 completions in 16 attempts for 155 yards. Capistrano Valley (11-0) raced to a 28-0 second-quarter lead and was ahead, 35-7, at halftime. Substitutes played most of the final two periods for the winners.
Paul Shaheen, who rushed for 87 yards in six carries, all in the first half, ran 37 yards through a big hole at right tackle for the first Capistrano Valley touchdown with 9:11 left in the first quarter. After Vern MacKenzie recovered a Burroughs fumble at the Indian 17, Shaheen ran seven yards to a second touchdown.
Solliday’s first scoring pass was six yards to Poltl on the second play of the second quarter. On the next Capistrano Valley series, the Cougars went 75 yards in eight plays, with Poltl catching a 15-yard touchdown pass.
Burroughs interrupted the Cougars with a 17-yard option pass touchdown from Danny Suarez to Joe Atwell to make it 28-7, but Capistrano Valley scored with 30 seconds left in the half on a 10-yard pass from Solliday to Poltl.
