THE SIDELINES : Fla. Tackle Held in Sex Assault
A starting defensive tackle on the Florida football team has been arrested in connection with a sexual assault on a 22-year-old female student, campus police said.
Tony McCoy, 20, was being held at the Alachua County Adult Detention Center, charged with one count of sexual battery and one count of aggravated battery. McCoy is a 6-foot-1, 265-pound junior.
Angie Tipton, a university police spokeswoman, said police received a call at 1:51 p.m. Monday reporting a “hysterical woman running from a Tanglewood Village (campus) apartment.” When officers arrived, they spotted the victim hiding behind newspaper racks, Tipton said. The 22-year-old woman told police that she had been sexually assaulted in one of the apartments.
McCoy, who is from Orlando, was arrested later in the day.
