COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Reyes, Middleton Lead Chapman

Frantz Reyes scored 18 points and Rog Middleton 16 to lead Chapman College to an 84-70 victory over Dominican in the first round of the Doubletree tournament Friday at Chapman.

Reyes was nine of 15 from the field and had six rebounds. Middleton was seven of 12 and had a game-high 15 rebounds. Von Schuler added 11 for Chapman (2-0).

Chapman plays Fresno Pacific tonight at 8 in the championship game.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Claremont 105, Christ College Irvine 88--Junior guard Jamie McShan scored 35 points for host Christ College Irvine (2-3).

Cal State Hayward 77, Southern California 72--Lorenzo Hall scored 21 points to lead Cal State Hayward at home. Jeff Bickmore scored 20 and Terry Scruggs 18 for Southern California Christian (1-1). Bickmore also had 10 rebounds.

In the women’s Doubletree tournament:

Chapman 89, Cal State Hayward 85--Chapman had five players in double figures at home. Ruth Akahoshi led with 17, Julie King had 16, Jackie Sanders 15, Kim Takayama and Trice Bethel scored 14 each. Chapman (2-0) plays Pepperdine tonight at 6.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Cal State Fullerton 81, Weber State 57--Jill Matyuch scored 21 points and Genia Miller had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead Cal State Fullerton in the season opener for both teams. Kathy Werth added 12 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Stacey Oughton scored 15 points also for Fullerton, which led, 36-29, at the half.
