Calabasas Duo Gains Semifinals in Doubles

Natasha Pospich and Stacy Jellen of Calabasas High breezed through the first two rounds of doubles play in the Southern Section individual tennis championships Thursday at the Racquet Club of Irvine.
Pospich and Jellen, the Coyotes’ Nos. 1 and 2 singles players during the regular season, defeated Patti Cheesman and Siam Milhalland of Hemet, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round. Next, they dispatched of Bee and Beam Anesbutr of Chino, 6-0, 6-1.
The semifinal and final rounds will be played today in Irvine.
Samantha Meo and Tracy Paris, Calabasas’ top doubles team, were eliminated in the first round by Jackie O’Leary and Kristen Pollock of Corona del Mar, 6-4, 7-6.
In singles, Molly White of Camarillo defeated Dalynn May of Westlake of Los Angeles by default. White lost to Dana Hills’ Anne Mall, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round. Agoura’s Trish Silverman defeated Ritu Manjunath of St. Lucy’s, 6-0, 6-1, before losing to Page Bartelt of Capistrano Valley, 6-3, 6-1.
In the City Section individual championships at the Racquet Centre in Studio City, Birmingham’s Tracy Glass defeated Gloria Cheng of Eagle Rock, 6-2, 6-1, in a first-round match.
The singles and doubles quarterfinals will be played Monday at the Racquet Centre.
Grant’s Gabriella Knizek defeated Gardena’s Mindy Watanabe, 6-2, 7-6, and Taft’s Jenny Nussbaum beat Marshall’s Laurel Taggert, 6-0, 6-0.
Kim Watzman of Birmingham lost to second-seeded Monica Kocian of Fairfax by default, 6-0, 3-0.
Kellie Christianson of Granada Hills, Nue Bui of El Camino Real and Taft’s Julie Koppokin each won by default.
In doubles, Terri Aldrette and Sharyn Olesker of Kennedy defeated Margaret Kim and Betty Chen of Van Nuys, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Granada Hills’ Anita Sarad and Terri Suzakawa defeated Lena Ericsson and Amy Davis of Westchester, 6-4, 7-5.
Dana Rand and Bridgette Payton of Birmingham lost to Vickey Sue and Vania Lee of Eagle Rock, 6-4, 6-3. Taft’s Dawn Young and Pam Klosterman defeated Grant’s Wendy Abramson and Elise Merjan, 6-0, 6-1.
Rebecca Perry and Jennifer Galvez of Chatsworth defeated Mary Espinoza and Michele Encinas of South Gate, 6-0, 6-3.
