HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Australian Team Edges Mission Bay in Overtime

The Mission Bay boys’ basketball team came within a point of defeating Vermont of Australia in overtime, but the Bucanneers could not get off a shot in the final 11 seconds and lost, 76-75, in a nonleague game Friday at Mission Bay.

Mission Bay’s Rick Moe (eight points) hit a three-pointer at the end of regulation to tie the game, 71-71. Nick Tenner (19 points) scored all five of Vermont’s points in overtime, including the game-winner on a layup with 11 seconds left.

Wyatt Spencer led the Bucs (1-1) with 22 points Lincoln Neill had a game-high 26 points for Vermont, which plays Morse tonight.

Hilltop Invitational

Chula Vista 70, La Jolla 28--The Spartans (3-1) jumped to leads of 32-13 at the half and 56-18 after three quarters. Shane Howell had 11 points and Ken McDuffy 10. Craig Woodall led La Jolla (0-4) with eight points.

Kearny 48, Hoover 35--Kearny, which had already clinched a title game tonight at 5:15 against Sweetwater, got 14 points from Darnay Scott and outscored the Cardinals, 17-8, in the fourth quarter to remain undefeated at 5-0. Roger Blake scored 10 points for Hoover (0-5).

Point Loma 64, Hilltop 39--J.J. Stokes had 24 points, and Pat Roberson and Ed Greer 12 each as the Pointers improved to 2-2. Carlos Gonzales led Hilltop (2-2) with 12 points.

Wolfpack tournament

Bonita Vista 76, Clairemont 51--Rope Perry had game highs of 24 points and 11 rebounds for Bonita Vista at Santana. Allen McNamee added 21 points and Mike Barnett 16 points and seven rebounds. The Barons (3-0) will play Montgomery in the championship tonight at 7:30 at Santana.

Montgomery 56, West Hills 53--George Scott scored 20 points for Montgomery (1-4), which outscored West Hills in the fourth quarter, 20-13. David Keithly had 16 points for West Hills (0-4).

Small Schools Invitational

La Jolla Country Day 47, St. Margaret’s 32--Eric Vandenderg scored 17 points and had 16 rebounds for La Jolla Country Day (3-4).

Bush (Seattle) 71, Francis Parker 44--Tony Giese and Jay Unlir combined for 33 of Bush’s points. For the Lancers (0-3), Gene Knight scored 14 points.

Christian 84, Mountain Empire 68--Tony Clark’s 58 points led the Patriots (2-0) to today’s semifinal against Bush at 10 a.m.

Norsemen-Warhawk tournament

Lincoln 79, Southwest 69--Darryl McMillan scored 36 points for No. 4 Lincoln (3-1). Adalberto Silva scored 29 for Southwest, which led, 54-53, after three quarters.

Trabuco Hill Tournament

Rancho Buena Vista 85, Fullerton 82--Darryl Parker (31) and Brad Grubaugh (29) combined for 60 of the Longhorns points. RBV (1-1) led, 46-39 at the half. Parker had 14 rebounds.

Riverside Kiwanis Tournament

San Pasqual 64, Riverside Poly 53--Erik Meek had 16 points and Bryan Banner 15 for No. 7 San Pasqual, which remained undefeated at 6-0 and will play Moreno Valley in the championship game today.

Nonleague

Poway 79, Patrick Henry 44--Frank Garrett scored eight of his game-high 22 points in the third quarter as the No. 9 Titans outscored Patrick Henry, 25-6.

Calvin Christian 61, Julian 34--Reuben Bons and Mike Carter combined for all but 15 of Calvin Christian’s points. Bon had 25 points and 11 rebounds and Carter 21 points for the host Crusaders (3-1).

University City 69, Escondido 48--Soup Hooper scored 22 points for host University City.

Girls

Point Loma tournament

San Diego 47, La Jolla 43--Three San Diego players scored in double figures--Nene Hilbert (17), Chrissy Smith (11) and Patricia Buck (10).

Vermont (Australia) 61, Mission Bay 35--The visiting All-Stars had 10 three-pointers.

Santana 43, Oceanside 36--Stephanie Thompson led Santana (6-0) with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
