PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Fountain Valley Boys Find Way to Clinch Santa Ana Championship

The Fountain Valley High School boys’ soccer team won and tied its games in the championship bracket of the Santa Ana Elks tournament Saturday, but still came away with the title because it had the largest total-points margin in the two-weekend event.

Goalkeeper Joe Penaslor had 15 saves Saturday, seven in the school’s 3-0 victory over third-place finisher La Quinta.

Against Santa Ana, which placed second in the tournament, Penaslor had eight saves. Goalkeeper Hector Ramo had six saves in the 0-0 tie for Santa Ana.

In the Santa Ana Elks tournament, consolation bracket:

Don Lugo 3, Santa Ana Valley 0--Goalkeeper Dave Martelo had four saves for Don Lugo and Rene Ramirez scored two goals.

Centennial 0, Garden Grove 0--Centennial advanced in the shootout, 5-3.

Don Lugo 6, Centennial 0--Goalkeeper Dave Martelo had three saves and Mike Estrella scored two goals for Don Lugo in the Consolation B finals.

In Consolation A bracket:

Canyon (Anaheim) 2, Loara 1--Adam Fox and Freddie Velez scored for Canyon.

Westlake 2, Canyon 1--Tony Terroni and David Lurry scored for Westlake.

Westlake 2, Loara 0--Tony Terroni and Scott Anderson scored for Westlake and goalkeeper Jay Gruber had seven saves to record the shutout for Westlake.

In the Irvine tournament championship game:

Foothill 2, Newport Harbor 1--Eric Fukuda and Darrin Jacobs each scored, and goalkeeper Lance Anderson had 13 saves for Foothill (5-0). Newport Harbor’s Tomas Erickson scored for Newport Harbor and goalie Kristian Osterberg had eight saves. Fukuda was named the outstanding offensive player of the tournament and Todd Tist of Newport Harbor the top defensive player.

In the Brea-Olinda boys’ tournament:

Katella 2, Edison 1--Brian Schenk and Jesse Santibanez scored for Katella in a quarterfinal match.

Katella 1, Brea 0--Brian Schenk scored the only goal and goalkeeper Paul Bravo got the shutout in the semifinal victory for Katella (6-1-1). Katella will play Cerritos in the final at 6 p.m. next Saturday.

In the South Torrance boys’ tournament:

Huntington Beach 3, MiraCosta 1--Dean Syrengelas, Sing Pravongvingkham and Matt Acocello scored for the Oilers in the first-round game.

Redondo Beach 4, Huntington Beach 2--Chris Wright and Jason Greasley scored for Huntington Beach (2-2), which will play Dec. 21 in the consolation round.

Claremont 4, Servite 1--Center forward Lenny Romero scored Servite’s only goal in a first-round game.

Servite 3, Ocean View 3 (Servite advances in shootout)--Lenny Romero scored all three goals in regulation and Servite won the tiebreaking shootout, 3-1, and advances to the consolation semifinals Thursday.

In the Irvine girls’ tournament championship game:

Dana Hills 2, El Toro 1--Right forward Jenny Koenig scored twice, goalkeeper Briana O’Dowd had nine saves and sweeper Beth Wellik played a strong game for Dana Hills (5-0). In its four tournament games, Dana Hills outscored its opponents, 21-2. El Toro (3-1) got a goal from Shawn Veloria. Linda Lunceford, who helped Trabuco Hills to the consolation championship, was named the tournament’s top offensive player and Troy’s Cheryl Queen was selected the outstanding defensive player.

In the Cerritos girls’ tournament:

Marina 8, Gahr 1--Wendy Gratteau, Debbie Klein and Tricia Rossman each scored two goals and Shauna McMurray and Amy Peterson each had a goal for Marina. Cristin Rossman did not have to make a save in the victory.

Marina 2, La Quinta 1--Tricia Rossman scored 10 minutes into second half to break a 1-1 tie for Marina. Debbie Klein also scored for Marina (2-2), which advances to the quarterfinals. Stephanie Stucker scored for La Quinta.

In H.H. Wilson girls’ tournament:

Santa Margarita 8, Santa Ana Valley 0--Allie Werve scored three goals for Santa Margariata in the first-round match.

In the second round:

Santa Margarita 4, Beverly Hills 1--Werve had two goals and Jennifer Worley and Michelle Geyer each had one for Santa Margarita.
