All-Stars Characterized by Versatility : Football: If the all-county team could take the field, the multiple talents of the players would offer flexibility.

If The Times’ 1989 Ventura County all-star team could take the field in the sameuniform . . .

The team would reflect the defensive strength of the Marmonte League and the offensive explosiveness of the Channel League. Frontier League champion Santa Clara would play a major role and surprising Fillmore of the Tri-Valley League would contribute.

The offense would specialize in a drop-back passing attack with quarterbacks Tim Gutierrez of Santa Clara and Jason Isaacs of Buena at the controls.

Gutierrez is the county’s all-time leading passer and ranks fifth on the all-time state list for passing yardage. The two-time all-county selection led Santa Clara to the Division VIII semifinals by completing 210 of 334 passes for 2,939 yards and 18 touchdowns. Despite playing behind an inexperienced offensive line, Isaacs rewrote Buena’s passing records, completed 143 of 244 for 1,961 yards and eight touchdowns. Gutierrez threw only nine interceptions and Isaacs threw only 10.

Several receivers could be sent out at once on patterns because the interior line would pass block so well.

And what receivers they would be: Shawn Young of Channel Islands is the county’s premier deep threat, averaging 24 yards a catch and scoring six touchdowns in a run-oriented offense. Tony Williams of Buena gets open quickly and runs well after he catches the ball. Williams, Buena’s leading receiver while playing running back, had 44 catches for 540 yards and three touchdowns. He would fare well on a reverse as well, having rushed for 725 yards on 104 carries.

The running game would be explosive outside the tackles and powerful on short-yardage situations. In addition to the versatile Kwinn Knight of Santa Clara and the prolific Danny Taylor of Ventura, the team’s kicker, Tory Cabral of Fillmore, and several players on the defense are also excellent running backs.

Knight is the best ever in the county at finding the end zone, having scored 33 touchdowns and four two-point conversions for 206 points. He rushed for 911 yards in 140 carries and had 62 receptions for 660 yards. Taylor shattered school records while rushing for 1,554 yards in 226 carries.

Cabral, the only junior on the first-team offense, helped Fillmore into the second round of the Division IX playoffs by rushing for a county-high 1,555 yards in 188 carries. The junior scored 16 touchdowns, made 28 of 30 point-after kicks and two of four field-goal tries for 130 points.

The runners would be ushered by five tremendous offensive linemen. Two of them, Tim Dowler of Oxnard and Ted Lawrence of Santa Clara, are centers. The others, Joe Smigiel of Newbury Park, Reggie Nelinger of Thousand Oaks and Matt Eckman of Ventura, are tackles. Any of them, however, could make the adjustment needed to play guard. All are quick enough to fire out and catch a piece of a linebacker as well as powerful enough to turn a defensive lineman away from the hole through which a back is running.

Dowler, a three-year starter, has teamed with Oxnard quarterback Johnel Turner since their youth football days. Lawrence, who also played youth football with his current quarterback, Gutierrez, exhibited exceptional leadership as well as consistent play.

Smigiel and Nelinger, both team captains, specialize in pulling and leading backs downfield with devastating run blocks. Smigiel also scored two touchdowns on a tackle-counter play. Eckman, a two-way player, was the blocker Taylor ran behind for his toughest yards.

If the all-star defense was able to take the field, not many introductions would have to be made. Only five teams are represented on the unit and Marmonte League champion Thousand Oaks boasts five first-team defenders.

Chris Foster and Nick Ochoa of Thousand Oaks and Jeff Jay of Newbury Park are linemen, but all three are exceptionally quick and athletic. Jay, the Marmonte League Defensive Player of the Year, is a nose tackle who can beat a center at his own snap.

Ochoa, who led Thousand Oaks with 18 sacks, plays with a ferocious intensity. Foster, another emotional player, beats opposing linemen with a fast start and great leverage. Foster is also a bowling ball of a fullback who rushed for 531 yards and led the Lancers with 13 touchdowns.

Lance Martin of Thousand Oaks, the Marmonte League Player of the Year, leads a versatile linebacking corps that includes outside linebacker Bryant Taylor of Oxnard, Ryan Turner of Newbury Park and Scott Foster of Camarillo.

Martin, a two-time all-county pick with enormous strength and deceptive speed, paced the Lancers in tackles from his middle linebacker position.

The other three are rangy outside linebackers. Taylor can cover from sideline to sideline and is also a fine pass defender. In 10 games, the repeat all-county selection also rushed for 1,436 yards and 15 touchdowns in 228 carries as the fullback in the Oxnard wishbone.

Turner was the Panthers’ big-play defender, and his interception in the fourth quarter of a playoff victory over Palos Verdes set up the winning touchdown. Foster, who also stars on the basketball court for Camarillo, is a rugged player equally adept at rushing the passer and defending the run.

The secondary is highlighted by two repeat selections, Steve Rudisill of Thousand Oaks and Johnel Turner of Oxnard. Rounding out the defense are Tim Ross of Royal, the unit’s only junior, and Jim Magallanes, a cornerback who proved difficult to beat.

Rudisill, last year’s Marmonte League Defensive Player of the Year, was a savvy member of a Thousand Oaks defense that posted five shutouts. His pass coverage and sure tackles from free safety prevented big plays. Rudisill, who had five interceptions, also played running back.

Turner, who played safety and quarterback for Oxnard, is one passer who loves to hit. He enjoys defense more than offense, even though he scored 18 touchdowns and rushed for 748 yards. He had three interceptions.

Magallanes, a cornerback who loves to go after the ball, tied for the county lead with seven interceptions. He also played wide receiver and scored seven touchdowns on receptions and reverses.

Ross, also a safety, is a second-year starter who is one of several talented Highlander underclassmen. He served as center fielder in the pass coverage, leading the team with four interceptions--including one for a touchdown--and is Royal’s finest tackler.
