COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Payton Helps Beavers Defeat Cal, 64-58

Gary Payton scored nine points during a 16-4 second-half run that gave Oregon State a 58-54 lead with two minutes remaining and the Beavers went on to beat California, 64-58, Sunday in a Pacific 10 game at Berkeley.
Payton, who made only two of seven shots in the first half, scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half to rally the No. 23 Beavers (11-2 overall, 4-0 in the Pac-10).
California (10-4, 1-2) led, 32-28, at halftime, and stretched its lead to 47-37 before Payton starting making his shots and Oregon State switched from a zone defense to man-to-man. The Bears scored only eight points in the final 10 minutes.
Stanford 58, Oregon 56--Kenny Ammann made a seven-foot jump shot from the baseline with no time left to give the Cardinal the Pacific 10 win at Stanford.
Only 30 seconds before, Ammann slapped away a pass from Oregon’s Bob Fife, knocking it into the hands of Stanford’s Adam Keefe to give the Cardinal possession to set up the winning basket.
Stanford (9-2, 1-1) outscored the Ducks (7-6, 1-1), 6-3, in the final three minutes to clinch the win.
Pacific 75, UC Santa Barbara 53--Dell Demps scored 25 points and Don Lyttle had 23 to lead the Tigers to the Big West Conference upset at Stockton.
Pacific (8-4 and 1-3) scored the first 10 points of the second half to extend its lead to 45-22. The Tigers’ biggest lead came with 6:13 left when Demps scored to make it 64-31.
Santa Barbara (8-3, 2-1) shot 37% from the field.
Utah 61, Hawaii 54--Josh Grant helped the Utes upset the Rainbows in the Western Athletic Conference game Saturday night at Honolulu by making three baskets and a free throw that made the score 57-51 with 1:56 left.
