COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Antelope Valley on Offensive in 110-83 Win

Antelope Valley College broke several school records en route to a 110-83 Foothill Conference victory at Desert on Wednesday.

The Marauders (16-6, 2-1) rolled up a season-high point total and set a school record with 12 three-point baskets. Tony Madison scored a season-high 31 points, including a school-record eight three-point baskets.

Madison set the tone with a three-point basket seconds after the opening tip-off. Desert assumed its first lead at 25-24, but Antelope Valley launched a 13-3 run to take control. Madison scored 17 points in the first half, including 15 on three-point shots.

Steve Walker (21 points, 16 rebounds, four blocked shots), Joe Mantashigian (15), Walter Brooks (13) and Demetrius Phillips (11) also scored in double figures for Antelope Valley.

In other games:

Cal State Los Angeles 76, Cal Lutheran 56--Cal State L. A. snapped Cal Lutheran’s two-game winning streak while extending its winning streak to three games in a nonconference game at Cal State Los Angeles.

Sophomore guard Jeff deLaveaga scored a game-high 26 points for the Kingsmen (2-14). Mike Demeter scored 13 points and pulled down a season-high 15 rebounds.

Claremont 78, Occidental 64--Despite Chris Anderson’s 22 points, the Stags built on a four-point halftime lead and cruised in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at Occidental.

WOMEN

Valley 66, Santa Monica 64: Christine Rumfola hit a 15-foot jump shot with 13 seconds to play to cap a second-half surge and lift the Valley women’s team to victory in a Western State Conference game at Santa Monica.

With her team trailing, 62-53, with 3:40 to play, Sylvia Castaneda, who led Valley (16-4, 2-1 in conference play) with 16 points, triggered the rally. Castaneda, who was seven of 12 from the field, scored four points down the stretch. Two points came on a steal and a layup to tie the score, 64-64, with 1:12 left.

Castaneda had five steals and six assists. Teammate Angie Smith added four points during the rally.

Desert 72, Antelope Valley 53--Desert jumped to a 10-0 lead and coasted in the Foothill conference game at home.

Susan Collins scored a game-high 20 points to lead Desert (3-0 in conference). Anna Quiles led Antelope Valley (7-10, 2-1) with 18 points and Susan Hervey added 16 points and nine rebounds.

Canyons 81, Glendale 47--The law of averages caught up with Glendale, which made its first six shots, then cooled considerably in a WSC loss to visiting Canyons. Michelle Cabaldon and Tressie Millender scored 16 and 15 points for Canyons (15-4, 2-1).
