COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : CLU Sets Record in 127-42 Victory

Cal Lutheran set a school record for margin of victory by demolishing Life Bible, 127-42, in a men’s nonconference basketball game Friday evening at Cal Lutheran.

The 85-point margin of victory broke the previous record margin of 61 points, which Cal Lutheran had achieved twice.

In 1974, Cal Lutheran beat Life Bible, 118-57, and in 1975, the Kingsmen thumped Simpson College, 113-52.

Cal Lutheran shot 59% from the field, and Coach Mike Dunlap went to his bench early. Five reserves scored in double figures for Cal Lutheran.

Reserves Wayne Dominick, who had 19 points and 11 rebounds, Syd Thwaites (17 points), Rob Caulfield (16 points and seven steals), Marcus Littlejohn (16 points and 11 rebounds) and Mike Wise (11 points and six steals) all flourished with extended playing time.

Starters Jeff deLaveaga and Mike Demeter scored 20 and 10 points for Cal Lutheran (3-15).

Life Bible (6-7) was led by John Spinelli with 20 points, but the team made only 11 of 56 shots from the field.

WOMEN

Cal State Northridge 50, Cal State Dominguez Hills 43--Julie Arlotto scored 12 points, Sandi Olson added 11 and Denna Mulverhill grabbed 10 rebounds as the Lady Matadors posted a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. win.

Northridge is 2-0 in CCAA games after going 3-13 in nonconference play. Dominguez Hills, which shot only 28.6% to CSUN’s 42.2%, dropped to 9-8, 1-2.

Cal Lutheran 64, Azusa Pacific 55--Despite shooting 36% from the field, the Regals forced 32 turnovers and had 21 steals in an NAIA District 3 game at Cal Lutheran.

Cal Lutheran forward Dani Elton made two free throws to tie the score, 53-53, and the Regals (11-5, 4-2) went on an 11-2 run over the next 7 1/2 minutes to clinch the win. Elton scored nine of her game-high 19 points during that span.

Cal Lutheran guard Brenda Lee scored 12 points and Rachel Boba had seven assists.

Occidental 86, Whittier 46--Sharon Bruner scored 23 points and Kelly Stephenson added 20 as the Tigers routed the winless Poets in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Whittier.

Genevieve Wilkinson added 12 points for Occidental (7-8, 2-0).
