COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : CSUN Women Still Unbeaten in CCAA Play

After struggling to a 3-12 record in nonconference play, the Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team won its third consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game with a 72-68 victory over Chapman on Saturday night at Chapman. The win was the Lady Matadors’ fourth in the past five games.

The win kept Northridge (6-12, 3-0 in conference play) in a first-place tie with Cal Poly Pomona, the eight-time defending CCAA champion and the Lady Matadors’ next opponent.

Northridge was led by forwards Denna Mulverhill and Julie Arlotto.

Mulverhill had 16 points on eight-of-13 shooting and nine rebounds. Arlotto added 15 points and five rebounds.

The Lady Matadors shot 51.9% (28 of 54) from the field and outrebounded Chapman, 32-28.

Julie King scored a game-high 23 points for Chapman (13-6, 1-3).

In other women’s basketball games:

Valley 68, Ventura 58--Sandrine Rocher scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a match-up of undefeated Western State Conference teams at Valley.

Christine Rumfola scored 10 points for Valley (19-4, 5-1), which led by as many as 18 points in the second half. Ventura fell to 17-5, 4-1.

Moorpark 66, Glendale 47--Debra Rabin scored a game-high 20 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and made seven steals for Moorpark in a Western State Conference game.

Moorpark’s Cindy Wiley made six of 10 shots and scored 16 points. Angie Long pulled down 16 rebounds for Moorpark (13-7, 4-1).

Glendale (2-12, 0-6), which trailed only 13-10 after 10 minutes of play, was led by Fatima Jose with 16 points. Maile Feig and Debbie Mejia each scored 13 points.

Canyons 96, Santa Barbara 49--Former Hart High player Kim Posey had 21 points and 12 rebounds, both season highs, to lead host Canyons in a Western State Conference game.

Tressie Millender scored 16 points and Michelle Cabaldon added 14 for Canyons (17-4, 5-1), which produced its third-highest point total of the season and shot 52%. Every Canyons player scored. Santa Barbara (4-13, 1-4) had only five players.

Cal Lutheran 65, Redlands 49--Leslie Stevens scored 17 points to lead the Regals (12-5) in a nonleague game at Cal Lutheran. Brenda Lee and Dani Elton each had 14 points for Cal Lutheran.

MEN

Canyons 91, Santa Barbara 86--Santa Barbara fouled the wrong player in the final minute of a Western State Conference game at College of the Canyons.

Twice.

Trailing, 88-85, with 22 seconds to play, Santa Barbara fouled Cougar forward Nick Sanderson, the conference’s leading free-throw shooter. Sanderson, who has made 81 of 93 (87%) free throws, made both shots.

With 12 seconds to play, Sanderson again was fouled, this time intentionally, and he responded by making one of two free throws.

“They fouled the right guy,” Canyons Coach Lee Smelser said.

The free throws were the only ones for Sanderson, who scored 15 points, including two of two three-point shots.

Canyons (9-14, 2-4), which trailed, 43-39, at halftime, grabbed a permanent lead five minutes into the second half. Santa Barbara cut the gap to 84-82 with 40 seconds to play on a basket by Shakir Ahmad, who finished with 19 points. Canyons’ Nate Conner made two free throws and center Aaron Clark (game-high 23 points) added an inside basket.

Santa Barbara’s Chris Deibert then added a three-point shot before Sanderson was fouled.

Larry Allbritton had 19 points and eight rebounds for Canyons.

Antelope Valley 126, Victor Valley 68--Six players scored in double figures as the Marauders posted their fourth consecutive triple-figure victory in a Foothill Conference game.

Tony Madison paced Antelope Valley (19-6, 5-1) with 26 points.

Christian Heritage 97, The Master’s 90--Master’s blew a 13-point halftime lead in an NAIA District 3 nonconference game at Grossmont College in El Cajon. Tom Bruner had 23 points , including 16 in the first half, for The Master’s (12-12).

Stuart Epperson added 18 points, Jason Webster scored 14 and Damon Greer 12 for Master’s.
