Chad Provensal, a 6-foot, 205-pound linebacker from Bakersfield High School, and Sam Williford, a 6-foot, 185-pound running back/wide receiver from Pasadena Muir High, have orally committed to play football at San Diego State University.
Provensal was a three-year starter at linebacker for Bakersfield and played both linebacker and running back last year. It was his first season as a running back, and he broke the school record with 1,595 yards.
“He is intense,” Bakersfield Coach Pat Preston said. “He has good speed and loves to play football.”
Provensal’s scholarship will be contingent on the results of his Scholastic Aptitude Test. He was picked as an honorable mention all-American by USA Today, and will play in the All-American High School Football Classic in Tulsa, Okla. in July.
Williford had more than 800 yards rushing and receiving last season.
“He’s got good speed and quickness,” said Muir Coach John Tyree. “He’s an all-purpose back. His only weakness is he is not a real good blocker.”
Williford, who also visited Kansas and Oregon, was 16 during his senior season and recently turned 17.
“A lot of people think he won’t be a good running back, but he is going to grow,” Tyree said.
