Capistrano Valley 96, Corona 72--The Cougars used a dominating third quarter to defeat visiting Corona.

The Cougars (18-8), the county’s second-ranked team, could not shake Corona (15-9) in the first half. Corona trailed by just six points, 47-41, at halftime.

But in the third quarter, the Cougars outscored Corona, 28-11, to take a 75-52 lead.

Capistrano Valley was led by forward Scott McCorkle and guard Chris Kostoff. McCorkle led all scorers with 33 points, and Kostoff had 27 points, including six three-pointers.

The Cougars, led by center Eric Gruenewald’s game-high 12 rebounds, also dominated the boards, 49-24.

“Our kids took Corona a bit lightly,” Capistrano Valley Coach Mark Thornton said. “We didn’t play much defense in that first half. There’s no way we should’ve given up 41 points in a half like that. Obviously we played much better defensively in the second half.”

El Toro 85, Indio 66--Rob Johnson scored 31 points, including eight three-pointers, for visiting El Toro (20-5). El Toro made 13 three-pointers in the game. Kevin Martin and Kirk Riddle each scored 14 points for El Toro. Indio ends 14-10. El Toro led, 25-15, after a quarter and, 43-24, at the half.

Los Alamitos 74, Warren 57--Robert Conlisk scored 19 points, including 14 in the first half, to lead the Griffins (20-6) at Los Alamitos.

Conlisk, a 6-foot 11 center, also had 10 rebounds, four blocked shots and three dunks.

Los Alamitos outscored the Bears, 16-8, in the third quarter, and had a 28-point lead in the fourth quarter before removing all starters. Dan Stockwell had 15 points, including four three-pointers, and Jason Cunningham had 14 points, including 12 in the second half, and 10 rebounds to help the Griffins.

Ryan Dominguez led Warren with 18 points.
