HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Green Leads Bishop Amat Past Whittier

Senior center Jason Green scored 32 points, including four free throws in the game’s final minute, to lead La Puente Bishop Amat past Whittier, 70-69, in the second round of the Southern Section 4-AA boys’ playoffs Friday night at Bishop Amat.

After Green--who will attend UCLA on a football scholarship--made two free throws with one second left, Whittier failed to send the game into overtime when Chris Emech, who finished with 22 points, missed the second of two free throws after being fouled at the buzzer. Bishop Amat (16-11) will play top-seeded Compton Dominguez in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

5-AA DIVISION

Lynwood 43, Alhambra 41--Senior Earnest Killum scored 27 points, including a game-winning three-point basket, to lead the top-seeded Knights (28-1) at Alhambra.

Long Beach Poly 65, Eisenhower 51--Center Willie McGinest, who has signed to play football at USC next fall, scored 25 points to lead the second-seeded Jackrabbits (23-2) at Eisenhower.

5-A DIVISION

Canyon Country Canyon 59, Capistrano Valley 57--Forward Jerome Nixon made a 20-foot jump shot with one second remaining to lead the Cowboys (20-6) at Canyon.

2-A DIVISION

Santa Clara 73, Pius X 55--Senior Shon Tarver scored 32 points to lead the Saints (21-0) at Santa Clara. Tarver, a 6-5 guard who is averaging 31 points, connected on 13 of 24 from the field and had nine rebounds.
