SOUTHERN SECTION BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : 4-A BOYS : Bishop Montgomery Holds Off Buena Park Rally for 59-51 Win

Buena Park cut a 19-point deficit in the first half to two, but still lost to Bishop Montgomery, 59-51, Friday night in the second round of the Southern Section 4-A playoffs at Bishop Montgomery.

The Coyotes (12-13) were led by sophomore center Gavin Molinar’s 16 points. Darrell Daniel had eight points in a 13-0 run that gave Bishop Montgomery (16-7) a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Daniel finished with 22.

Buena Park, which got 13 points from Ray Lanier, missed all nine of its free-throw attempts in the second quarter and trailed by 15 at halftime and by 10 going into the fourth quarter.

But the Coyotes scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to cut their deficit to 44-38.

Two free throws by Donyell Collins--who was held to four points, six below his average--brought Buena Park to 46-44 with 4:11 to play.

A three-point basket by Kirk Jones 40 seconds later gave Bishop Montgomery a five-point lead, and the Coyotes never got closer than that down the stretch.
